Historic Cairn Hill

Centuries ago, glacial action deposited soil, and rock gradually covering anancient lake bottom. A river of meltwater them wore through the gravel underlying sandstone bedrock to form the Elbow River leaving behind the now much gentler Elbow River. Trees in the valley bottom thinned as the land swept up the hill,  onto the windswept grassland, The valley continues to nurture examples of prairie vegetation still visited by native birds sand animals. The Elbow River meanders through lands set aside in 1883 for the Sarcee, Tsuu T'na people. Its confluence with the larger Bow River  marks the site of Calgary's origins as a North-West Mounted Police post in 1875. From the mid-1890s until 1912, people poured into Calgary. The population surpassed 55,000. A brief slowdown in 1913 was followed by another boom after the 1914 discovery of oil in Turner Valley less than 100 kilometers southwest of this hill. Soldiers recruited as they trained below "Cairn Hill". They took that name from the stone memorials they created here for themselves.
