Known as "Kities", the 113th Battalion (Lethbridge Highlanders) was recruited from the Lethbridge, Margrath, and Fort Macleod vicinity. They trained at Sarcee from November, 1915 to September 27 1916 Under Lieutenant - Colonel W.A Pryce Jones. Traditional highland dress war worn only by there Pipe Band, whose thirteen pipers and six drummers wore the Argyll and Sutherland tatran kilt. All other unit members, including military and bugle bandsman, wore regulation infantry uniform. Prior to battle the 113th was disbanded with it 853 soldiers assigned
to the 17th reserve Battalion (seaforth Highlanders)
and the 16th Canadian Scottish. The 113th as a recruitment battalion is perpetuated by the South Alberta Light Horse Militia regiment, Medicine Hat. Letters, news reports and later-published diaries give a personal image of the war. "Away to my left rear a huge gray object reared itself into view, and slowly, very slowly, it crawled along like a gigantic toad, feeling its way across the shell-stricken field. It was a tank... the lastest invention of destruction and the first of its kind to be employed in the Great War".
Victor W. Wheeler, 50th battalion, September 1916.
