About Calgary
Calgary's Battalion Park
Recruitment & Training
| The Canadian mobilization system gathered volunteer into existing units or new recruitment battalions for training. Once in Europe, the men were reassigned to fighting units. All four battalions represented by the stone numbers here in Battalion Park, were new units created to supply the overseas drafts. Men from farm and city - ranch hands, office clerks, businessmen, miners and carpenters - arrived at Sarcee Camp. they were issued uniform, bedding, load carrying equipment, a mess kit and the controversial Ross rifle. manuals covered every aspect of life. Officers manuals included pay rates, ration lists, daily duties for all ranks, parades and drills, dress | regulations, bugle calls, and even sample forms. Physical
conditioning, company and battalion drill, maneuvers, trench digging, bayonet
fighting, signaling and map reading filled exhausting training days. Classed
in military regulations and law, administration, and first aid were attended,
and soldiers also spent hours on the rifle range. Recruitment was encouraged
by idealistic propaganda, found everywhere - even in 1916 Henderson's Directory.
" Today the whole world is engulfed in a mighty vortex of tribulation and
strife, and Canada is nobly and loyally doing her part ... tens of thousands...
are impatiently waiting their turn in the trenches." |
