War On The Home Front

Alberta recruits provided twenty- three infantry battalions, four mounted regiments, three artillery batteries and a field ambulance corps for overseas service. They also enlisted in the Canadian Engineers, Army Service Corps, Corps of Guides, the Medical Services, and service units. A total of 45,136 Albertans served overseas.  Most families were touched by the war campaigns, and bottle and can drives helped provide material support for the war effort, Women knit scarves, mitts, and socks for "our boys." They wrapped cotton bandages which were sent to hospitals and field dressing  stations where demand far outstripped supply. When the survivors, many wounded or disabled, returned to Calgary after the War, there was little work, and little money. On discharge, a private received six month's pay, approximately $120.00, and a small clothing allowance. A few veterans were hired to work with resettlement projects, such as farms, but were faced with severe drought in southern Alberta through the 1920's. Some searched for work for years. It was a difficult re-adjustment to civilian life.
