Alberta soldiers fought valianly in the "Great War" For example, Calgary's Own
the 137th, won 1 Victoria Cross, 4 Military Crosses, 1 Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Conduct Medals, 54 Military Medals, 5 Military Service Medals and even recognition from Allied countries, including 2 Belgian Groix de Guerre, and 2 Canadian Crosses of St. Goerge. One of only seventy VCs awarded to Canadians in WW1,
 
 

 

until overseas orders arrived . Then work hurried to leave a finishied record. In  1924 more then twenty formations existed. Gradually they disappeared. These last four surviving numbers were occasionally weeded and whitewashed by veterans or serving forces. Suggestions for preservation were made but not undertaken until 1984, when veteran and development interests comcided. The 113th was designated a Provincial Historic Resource. The 54,  151 and 137 were mapped, moved, and with the hill remodelled, were painstakingly returned, close to their original postion. Here in Battalion and protected for the future.
